What Is Twitter And How Does It Work?

Interested in going on Twitter but don’t have a clue how to get started?

Relax. Truth is, joining the micro-blogging platform is easier than you think. Here’s a short detail on what is Twitter and how does it work beginners guide. In just a few minutes, you’ll be ready to join in on the fun and be tweeting like a pro in no time.

What is Twitter, Exactly?

Twitter is one of the most popular social media platforms today. It works just like a newsfeed platform, where people, companies and brands from all over the world can “tweet”, or post what they want to say in 280 characters or less.

But that’s not all. Aside from text, users can get creative and post videos, photos or GIF images, or put up polls that gather popular opinion. In fact, the better and the more interesting or clever your tweet, the more chances you have of it being shared or re-tweeted.

If you’ve ever created a profile on Facebook or Instagram, then you’ll feel right at home in Twitter. You can share your thoughts, whether it be funny, sad or something outrageous as long as you can fit it in. This aspect is what makes Twitter different from other social media networks- tweets should be short, sweet and to the point.

How To Get Started On Twitter

  1. Joining Twitter is as easy as signing up for an account. Here’s a step-by-step procedure to get you started.
  2. Go to the Twitter platform by visiting www.Twitter.com
  3. Click or tap on the “Sign Up” button to create a Twitter account.
  4. You will be asked to fill out the required fields. Enter your Name and an Email Address. This information will be used to retrieve your password later on if you’re having sign-on issues.
  5. Create a password for your Twitter profile. It’s recommended that you set up a strong password to minimize the risks of having your account hacked. Enter your phone number for additional verification purposes that could be used later on.
  6. You’ll need to think of a username for your Twitter account. Head on over to the profile icon at the top right part of your screen, then click on Settings and Privacy. Get to the Account section and enter your preferred username. This will appear right on your profile page as a kind of identifier. Finally, put a profile pic so people will know who you are in person.

Congratulations! You now have a Twitter account. Before you start interacting, though, here are a few terms that you should know.

Tweets and You

Tweets are somewhat like posts in the world of Twitter. When you “tweet”, you’re sending out a message that will appear in your follower’s feed. Unless you’re set to a Public Profile, the tweets you send can only be seen by your followers.

How do you see the tweets of Twitter users you’re interested in? Easy. Go to their profile page and click or tap on the “Follow” button. Then, just wait for them to tweet something, which will appear on your newsfeed. Keep in mind that private accounts will need to accept your follow before you can start seeing their posts.

The Twitter Newsfeed

The newsfeed is where you get to see all the tweets, arranged in chronological order. Here, you can see the latest tweets from the accounts you follow.

Interestingly enough, the more people you follow, the more interesting your newsfeed becomes, which can really improve the Twitter experience. If you get a tweet from someone you don’t know or follow, don’t panic. It could be a re-tweet coming from a person you actually know about a trending topic, news or current event.

The Infamous Hashtag

Now, onto hashtags. A hashtag is a phrase or word that precedes a “#” symbol. This serves several purposes. One, it gives your followers a summary of what your tweet is, and two, it serves as a symbol that Twitter can use to categorize your post.

Hashtags may be used by Twitter users to seek out specialized content. For example, you want to see cute animal pictures, you can do a hashtag search and every post that has a similarly categorized hashtag will show up. It’s like a Google search but made localized and only within the Twitterverse.

Direct Messaging

What’s a respectable social media without a private messaging feature? Twitter does this via direct messaging. Users get an inbox where messages get sent. You can set up options to receive only messages from people you know or require permissions before you see the message.

How To Start Tweeting

Now that you know everything there is about Twitter, it’s time to do some tweeting!

Check out the top right part of the page for the Tweet button. Click on it, and a box will expand to accommodate your message. There will be several options available as well- adding a poll, a location, a GIF or a photo or video.

The “plus” button allows you to add a tweet to your previous one, creating an entirely new thread. There’s also an emoticon you can use for adding Emojis to your tweets.

The circle underneath the emoji is a gentle reminder of how close you are to the 280 character limit. It fills up and turns a yellow color if you’re about to reach the character limit. When you go over, the circle turns red and shows how many characters you’ve exceeded.

Hit the “Tweet” button when you’re ready to show the world what you think or feel. Your tweet will then be posted on your followers’ newsfeed, where they can view, comment or re-tweet your content.

To Follow Or Not To Follow?

You can do a search of the Twitter accounts you want to follow. Once their profile is up, you can follow them by clicking or tapping the Follow button just below the header. The words will change to “Following”, and you’ll start seeing their posts as they send out tweets.

You can unfollow a user by going to their profile page and clicking on the “Unfollow” button. You can also mute that user by going to the dropdown menu on the right of the tweet and selecting the “Mute” option.
